'Laverne & Shirley's' Penny Marshall and

Cindy Williams reunite for 'Sam & Cat'

 "117_"Salmon Cat" -

Cindy Williams and Penny Marshall say art is not imitating life when they get back together Saturday night for their first scripted TV show in more than 30 years.
The stars of the iconic sitcom “Laverne and Shirley” are guest-starring on “Sam & Cat,” the new Nickelodeon show that features Jennette McCurdy from “iCarly” as Sam and Ariana Grande from “Victorious” as Cat.
Saturday’s story line is that the Williams and Marshall characters created a 1970s TV show called “SalmonCat.”
The McCurdy and Grande characters call their current baby-sitting service “Sam and Cat.” Now they need permission to keep using the name, since it sounds close to “SalmonCat.”
The problem: The Williams and Marshall characters had a fight more than 30 years ago and haven’t spoken since.
The not-so-inside joke: For years after “Laverne & Shirley,” the real-life Williams and Marshall didn’t speak.
No matter, they both say. Today they do.
“Cindy and I are fine,” says Marshall.
“When we shot the show, Penny and I drove to the studio together,” says Williams. “We’re in touch all the time.”
Williams says the idea for the reunion came from “Sam & Cat” creator Dan Schneider.
“He’s a big ‘Laverne & Shirley’ fan,” says Williams. “He asked us. Penny and I talked about it. We’re not exactly at our fighting weight, but we thought it could be funny.”
Marshall says part of the appeal for her was that “we wouldn’t have to play ourselves … even though we do.”
Marshall admits she didn’t really know “Sam & Cat,” though she admires McCurdy and Grande.
Williams has a little more history with the Nick world.
“I would sit on the couch and watch ‘iCarly’ with my ex-husband’s 6-year-old granddaughter,” she says. “It’s a real joy to watch with a 6-year-old.

“So when I said I was going to be on ‘Sam & Cat,’ it was like, ’OMG, you’re going to meet Jennette and Ariana?!?’ ”
It isn’t lost on Williams and Marshall that “Sam & Cat,” like “iCarly,” continues a TV tradition of female buddy shows.
“They go back to Lucy and Ethel [in ‘I Love Lucy’],” Williams says. “There’s always a place for them. Girls look at life a little differently from guys.”
Most of the “Sam & Cat” audience wasn’t around for “Laverne & Shirley,” of course, never mind “I Love Lucy.”
“But we’re still in reruns,” Marshall points out. “There’s more awareness than you might think.”
Williams, 66, has done mostly live theater in recent years, including a 2007 Broadway run in “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
“I don’t think much about the passage of years,” she says. “In my head, I’m always 19.”
Marshall, 70, moved behind the camera to direct a series of hit movies, including “Big” and “A League of Their Own.”
Then, she says, the business changed.
“All they care about now is foreign sales,” she says. “They want ‘Transformers 15.’ You couldn’t get ‘A League of Their Own’ made today.
“There are still movies I’d like to make, like the story of Effa Manley [who owned the Newark Eagles in the Negro Leagues]. But it’s hard to get it done.”
So she’s semi-retired, sort of.
“If I get asked to do something I like,” she says, “I’ll do it.”
She also still has her director’s instinct.
“When we were shooting the fight scene in ‘Sam & Cat,’ they told me to punch Cindy in the face. I said no, I wouldn’t do it.
“I don’t think anybody should punch anybody else in the face, especially in a show for kids.”

The duel show spin-off will bring Sam (Jennette McCurdy) and Cat (Ariana Grande) back together with there old friends, Freddie (Nathan Kress), Robbie (Matt Bennett) and Jade (Liz Gillies).
On October 24, actress Jennette McCrudy posted a Vine titled, "Guess who's guest starring on this Sam & Cat special!!" In the Vine, McCrudy comically mixes up Liz Gillies and Nathan Kress. McCrudy also lampoons actor Matt Bennett by calling him Andy Samberg, a frequent joke in Victorious.

Nickelodeon's 'Sam & Cat' is two spinoffs

in one

Yes, kids,  that’s Sam Puckett from “iCarly” pulling up on that cool motorcycle at the beginning of “Sam and Cat,” a Nickelodeon show that premieres June 8 at 8 p.m.
And yes, that ditzy girl with whom Sam strikes up a conversation, then a friendship, then a roommate deal, is Cat Valentine from “Victorious.”
“As far as I can tell,” says Dan Schneider, creator of all three shows, “This may be the first double spinoff in TV history.”
Schneider says he doesn’t plan for spinoffs, but after eight series on Nickelodeon, things seem to work out that way. The same way “Drake & Josh” spun into “iCarly,” now two familiar characters get their own showcase.
“Of course we love having the built-in audience of fans from’iCarly’ and ‘Victorious’,” says Schneider, and yes, he’d love to have an old friend like Miranda Cosgrove, who played Carly, drop in for a guest appearance somewhere down the line.
“But we also want ‘Sam and Cat’ to stand entirely on its own,” he says. “Nickelodeon is for kids 6 to 14, so there is always a younger audience that’s not familiar with anything before.”
Sam (Jennette McCurdy) will still “be a free spirit” and eat bad food, while Cat (Ariana Grande) won’t lose her spaciness.
“But they had supporting roles on their last shows,” Schneider notes, “and that sometimes requires you to be a little more one-dimensional. We’ll round their characters out more on this one.”
Both Grande and McCurdy are ready for their closeups, he adds.
“I had no idea Sam would break out the way she did on ‘iCarly’,” says Schneider. “But the fans love her. And whenever kids talk about ‘Victorious,’ they all want to meet Cat.”
Schneider doesn’t lay out a formula for his shows, which have consistently been among the most popular on the network.
He does say, however, that it’s crucial to have jokes his whole range of viewers can understand.
“I say to my writers all the time, ‘This is s a great joke, but will an 8-year-old get it?’ Someone wrote a President Clinton joke recently. I told him President Clinton might as well be President Lincoln to these kids. They don’t know him.”
He also tries to minimize pop-culture references that tie the show to a particular point in time. He has the characters use his own fictional brand of computer. When he needs a reality-show joke, he uses his own made-up series, “Celebrities Under Water.”
“That sounds like it actually could be a reality show,” he says.”But it isn’t, so the reference never gets dated.”
Viewers also never hear what grade Sam and Cat have reached in school. For the show’s purposes, the more important details will surround their new baby-sitting service.
“They’re great characters to work with,” says Schneider. “I love buddy comedies anyway. I loved the Fonz and Richie on ‘Happy Days.’ ”
Even if his current audience has no idea who they were.

'Sam & Cat's' Jennette McCurdy & Ariana Grande Gain on Social 50 Chart

Singer and Nickelodeon television star Jennette McCurdy debuts at No. 25 on Billboard's Social 50 chart as online buzz steadily increases surrounding her and Ariana Grande's (of "Victorious" fame, and No. 48 in the tally) new spin-off show, "Sam & Cat," which begins shooting this month.
The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist pageviews, song plays and reactions.
McCurdy played Sam Puckett alongside Miranda Cosgrove in "iCarly," a Nickelodeon show which ended its seven-season run this past November. As "Victorious," another Nickelodeon teen comedy, nears the end of its fourth and final season this February, the series' Ariana Grande's character Cat Valentine will live on as McCurdy's character's roommate in "Sam & Cat."
Both have promising budding music careers. McCurdy's 2011 single "Generation Love" spent seven weeks on the Country Airplay chart and Hot Country Songs, and Ariana Grande has appeared on several "Victorious Cast" releases as well as delivering her own single, "Put Your Hearts Up," which is available on iTunes.
They both have sizable online followings as well. McCurdy has over 3 million followers on Facebook and over 1.8 million on Twitter. She obtained a combined 217,000 followers overall during the charting week. Ariana Grande reaches the 2 million follower mark on Facebook and passes 4 million followers on Twitter during the charting week, with 47,000 and 109,000 added on Facebook and Twitter respectively (a 30% overall weekly increase). Grande also posted a duet of "Baby It's Cold Outside" with Mac Miller (as Larry Lovestein, as he goes by when singing) that helps add over 834,000 plays to her YouTube channel during the week.
Lady Gaga's Ball Hits North America: Lady Gaga rises 18-10 on the tally as the North American leg of her "Born This Way Ball" tour prepped for its North American kick-off on Jan. 11. She's scheduled to hit the road in the BornBrave bus, which made headlines during the charting week as she announced she would provide free mental health counseling to fans during the tour.
"BornBrave Bus Is a place where mental health + depression are taken seriously w/ no judgement, FREE real help available to all," Gaga posted on Facebook. "I feel like most kids don't look for help because they feel embarrassed so mom + I wanted to break the stigmas around "help" and make it fun."
The news resulted in an 18% rise in weekly conversation on Facebook, culminating into a 112,000 follower gain on the platform. Her weekly overall plays across YouTube and VEVO rose by 11%, abringing 5.5 million views.
To cap the top 10, we have Katy Perry (7-9) falling just below Britney Spears (11-8) while PSY continues his fall down the tally following a 1 billion YouTube view boost (6-7). Nicki Minaj jumps 10-6, Bruno Mars falls (2-5), Taylor Swift (5-4) and Rihanna holds at No. 3. One Direction (4-2) and Justin Bieber (No. 1, again) lead the chart for the week.
